How cards bags are made?

Greeting card bags are usually made of Polypropylene. However, it is also made out of BOPP (bi-axially oriented polypropylene) & Cellophane. So, remember the three materials are as following:

  • BOPP (Bi-axially oriented Poly propylene)

What is Poly Propylene?

Stronger and more rigid than polyethylene. Preserves freshness with vapour and moisture barriers. Non-porous and excellent clarity. Ability to withstand high temperatures. It is also known as PP or Polyprop.

Polypropylene is a plastic polymer, of the chemical designation C3H6. It is used in many different settings, both in industry and in consumer goods. It can be used both as a structural plastic, packaging material and as a fiber.

Polypropylene is often used for food packaging. The melting point of polypropylene is very high compared to many other plastics, at 320'F (160'C), which means that the hot water used when washing dishes will not cause polypropylene dishware to warp. This contrasts with polyethylene, another popular plastic for containers, which has a much lower melting point. Polypropylene is also very easy to add dyes to, and is often used as a fiber in carpeting which needs to be rugged and durable, such as the carpet one finds around swimming pools or paving miniature golf courses. Unlike nylon, which is also often used as a fiber for rugged carpeting, polypropylene doesn't soak up water, making it ideal for uses where it will be constantly subject to moisture.

Research is ongoing with polypropylene, as makers experiment with different methods for synthesizing it. Some of these experiments yield the promise of exciting new types of polypropylene, with new consistencies and a different feel from the fairly rigid version we are all used to. These new elastic versions of polypropylene are very rubbery, making them even more resistant to shattering and opening up many different uses for an already pervasive plastic.

Polypropylene is not as sturdy as polyethylene, but it has benefits that make it the better choice in some situations. One of these situations is creating hinges from a plastic, such as a plastic lid on a travel mug. Over time, plastics fatigue from the repetitive stress of being opened and shut, and eventually will break. Polypropylene is very resistant to this sort of stress, and is the plastic most often used for lids and caps which require a hinging mechanism.

Like many plastics, polypropylene has virtually endless uses, and its development has not slowed since its discovery. Whether used for industrial molds, rugged currency, car parts, packaging or Tupperware, polypropylene is one of a handful of materials the world is literally built around.

What is Cellophane?

A transparent paperlike product that has high clarity, heat sealable, resist moisture, oil, and grease, and keep contents fresh.

Cellophane is a thin, transparent sheet made of processed cellulose.

Cellulose fibers from wood, cotton or hemp are dissolved in alkali to make a solution called viscose, which is then extruded through a slit into an acid bath to reconvert the viscose into cellulose. A similar process, using a hole (a spinneret) instead of a slit, is used to make a fibre called rayon.

Cellophane was invented by Jacques E. Brandenberger, a Swiss textiles engineer in 1908. After witnessing a wine spill on a restaurant tablecloth, Brandenberger initially had the idea to develop a clear coating for cloth to make it waterproof. He experimented, and came up with a way to apply liquid viscose to cloth, but found the resultant combination of cloth and viscose film too stiff to be of use. However the clear film easily separated from the backing cloth, and he abandoned his original idea as the possibilities of the new material became apparent. Cellophane's low permeability to air, grease and bacteria makes it useful for food packaging.

Whitman's candy company initiated use of cellophane for candy wrapping in the United States in 1912 for their Whitman's Sampler. They remained the largest user of imported cellophane from France until nearly 1924, when DuPont built the first cellophane manufacturing plant in the US. In 1935 British Cellophane Ltd was established, a joint venture between La Cellophane SA and Courtaulds, which opened a major factory producing cellophane in Columbus, OH in 1937. Cellophane is also used in gift baskets and flower bouquets.

Cellulose film has since been manufactured continuously since the mid-1930s and is still used today. As well as packaging a variety of food items, there are also industrial applications, such as a base for self-adhesive tapes like Sellotape and Scotch Tape, a semi-permeable membrane in certain types of battery, and as a release agent in the manufacture of fibreglass and rubber products. Typically, however, the use of the word "cellophane" has been genericized, and is often used informally to refer to a wide variety of plastic film products, even those not made of cellulose.

Cellophane sales have dwindled since the 1960s, through use of alternative packaging options, and the fact that Viscose is becoming less common because of the polluting effects of carbon disulfide and other by-products of the process. However the fact that cellophane is 100% biodegradable has meant it is returning in popularity as a food wrapping.

Selecting the right Greetings Card bags

First, measure the EXACT width & length of your art print…if the print measures 8" x 10" as an example, then you must determine the thickness. If you are using a single mat and a foam backing board, then select the bag which is 8 7/16" wide opening x 10 1/4" in height.... the 7/16" & 1/4" extra will accommodate the thickness. If using a double mat and foamboard, then you need more space in the bag width...so go and select the bag which is 8 11/16" opening x 11 15/16" in height. This bag is a little longer than you need, but you can fold over the excess bag height, remove the glue strip cover and seal the bags.

The Secret to selecting the right size Greeting Card Bags for Art Cards is to measure the EXACT SIZE of your ENVELOPE! The envelope is larger than the Card and determines the size of the Greeting Card Bag you select.

First, measure the height and width of your envelope…as an example: If your Envelope measures 5 1/4" x 7 1/4" in width, then select the bag which is 5 7/16" x 7 1/4"…a perfect fit. Just fold over the flap and seal.

Greeting Card Design Tips

Feel your correspondence creativity is drooping a bit? Here are a few special-event greeting cards that will have you whipping out the postage stamps in no time.

Birthday Card Ideas

For cards that are keepers, try something other than the off-the-shelf style:

  • For young kids, try origami, or paper folding. Fold an origami animal and attach it to an appropriate greeting card for a 3-D message. An origami frog can frolic on colourful cards for boys: "Happy" Birthday! A graceful swan or unicorn makes a winning birthday card for girls: Have a Magical Birthday, or May all Your Wishes Come True.

  • For someone over age 80 in the United States, request a special birthday greeting from the White House. Six weeks before the birthday, send the recipient's name and title, home address and mailing address, birthday and age, and your name and phone number to: The White House, Attention: Greetings Office, Washington, D.C. 20502-0039. The White House will mail a birthday greeting about ten days before the birthday.

  • For everyone in-between, humour is a hit. Browse funny card ideas in greeting card software until you find the perfect chuckle, and then add your own photo for a personalized, memorable birthday card.

Graduation Card Ideas

Don't give a boring graduation card with a ho-hum check inside; deliver your best wishes (and a little cash) in a way that's unique and memorable.

  • Everyone knows graduates want money. So save paper-make a graduation card out of a $20 bill. Fold the bill in half, then lightly tape your homemade card inside: Congratulations! Hope this fits the bill.

  • Instead of giving the graduate a card attached to a wrapped gift, wrap a gift around a card. For example, give a copy of Dr. Seuss' book, Oh, The Places You'll Go. Hide congratulatory cards, coupons, snippets of wisdom or even money inside the pages. The graduate has to read the book to find the other gifts.

  • You can even give a small money gift to the graduate with flair. Give cash in a greeting card that looks just like a blue jean pocket with this message: Hey, don't gripe. $5 is better than lint.

Wedding Announcement Ideas

No matter what style you choose, it's a good bet that printing your own wedding announcements will save more money for the honeymoon.

  • In a hurry? Make that classy engagement photo your wedding announcement. Just print pertinent ceremony and reception details on the back in your favourite font.

  • For a different look, compose a black-and-white or sepia image of bride and groom as toddlers for the wedding announcement photo, coupled with a message like this: Our love transcends time (or something less sappy).

  • For a card with texture, punch two holes at the top, thread a ribbon through then "tie the knot." You can tie your engagement photo to the top of your the wedding announcement card easily if both are the same size, but tie it loosely so that the photo can be flipped up or moved aside to show the announcement.

Wedding Card Ideas

  • If both the bride and groom have a healthy sense of humour, consider a customized sympathy card for the new groom. On the front: "I'm so sorry for your loss." then inside, feature a photo of a golf bag surrounded by a lush, green fairway.

  • Do the same for the bride, but feature a shopping mall scene and shopping bags in your sympathy message.

  • If you're the traditional type, wish the happy couple well with a wedding card that features the engagement photo you received in the announcement. Cut the photo into a heart shape and tape it to the front of a festive wedding card. You can polish the look with a colourful paper frame or two around or behind the photo.

Birth Announcement Ideas

  • Using greeting card software, type the baby's name and birth statistics right onto a picture post card featuring your new baby. Print addresses on the reverse, stamp and mail for a no-hassle, no envelope birth announcement.

  • For a change of pace, send out a copy of your baby's footprint on the birth announcement: Starting off on the right foot.

  • For trouble-free baby photo sharing, include an online photo album website address and password in your baby announcement. Then far-away family and friends can enjoy your photos up close. And if you use an online photo printing service to post your digital album, your viewers can buy their own copies of your pictures without bothering you.

But don't stop there. You can make clever holiday cards to cover every celebration on the calendar and even make greeting cards into gifts. If you ever run out of fresh ideas, just check the design section in your greeting card software. Soon you'll find that making your own greeting cards is so rewarding that you'll start inventing new milestones and holidays just for an excuse to make and give another a new card.
